Silver on packaging reads as premium, and it is one of the few finishes that changes how a box is perceived before anyone reads a word on it. But "silver foil box" describes at least three different production routes with different costs and different looks. This guide separates them. To order, see silver foil boxes.
The three routes to silver
| Route | How it works | Looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Foil stamping | Metallic foil transferred to selected areas by a heated die under pressure | Genuinely reflective, mirror like, only where you place it |
| Metallized board | The board itself carries a metallic layer, then artwork prints over it | Silver across the whole sheet, with print sitting on a metallic ground |
| Silver ink | A metallic pigment ink printed like any other colour | Metallic sheen rather than reflection. The cheapest and the least dramatic |
If your brief is a logo that catches the light, foil stamping is what you want. If it is a box that reads as a solid silver object, metallized board. If it is a subtle metallic accent at low cost, silver ink.
What drives the cost of foil stamping
- Area covered. Foil is consumed by the area it covers, so a large solid block costs meaningfully more than a fine logo.
- Number of passes. Each separate foil colour or position is a pass through the machine.
- Whether it combines with embossing. Combined foil and emboss in one operation gives a raised metallic effect and is a distinct setup.
- Substrate. Foil sits differently on a coated white board, an uncoated board and a soft touch laminate, and each needs its own settings.
Because the plates and the die are included on custom orders, the foil cost is about materials and machine time rather than tooling.
Designing for foil
Foil is less forgiving than ink. Hairline rules can break up. Very small reversed type, meaning type knocked out of a foil area, can fill in. Large solid areas can show any imperfection in the board beneath them. Three practical rules follow: keep foil elements a touch heavier than the ink version, avoid placing foil across a crease where the board will fold, and keep large foil areas away from panels that get handled constantly, since a mirror surface shows every fingerprint.
The counter intuitive pairing worth knowing is foil on a matte or soft touch ground. The contrast between a dead flat surface and a mirror finish is stronger than foil on a gloss laminate, where the whole box is already reflective.
Which boxes suit a silver treatment
Rigid gift boxes, folding cartons for cosmetics and fragrance, confectionery packaging, and anniversary or limited edition versions of a standard line. The finish is applied to the surface, so it has no effect on your internal dimensions, which means you can run a foiled version of an existing carton without resizing anything. If you want the whole structure to read premium rather than just the graphics, consider pairing the foil with a heavier board caliper, measured in points where one point is a thousandth of an inch.
Ordering, minimum and turnaround
Minimum order is 100 boxes. Pricing starts from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes and is confirmed on your written quote, with foil coverage, passes and board reflected there. The die, the plates, design support, US shipping and a digital proof before anything prints are included. Note that a digital proof shows placement and layout rather than the physical shine, so discuss the foil finish expectation explicitly when you quote.
Turnaround is quoted per product in three lanes: rush (expedited production plus air freight, premium about 7 to 25% depending on the job), standard by air, and cost saver by sea. Foil stamping is an extra operation, so build that into your planning. The floor is from about 7 business days, plus 2 to 5 days for delivery, and specialty imported items can run up to about 12 weeks. We produce in West Chicago, US, and Guangzhou, China.
Send your artwork with the foil areas marked and we will tell you which route gives the effect you are after at /quote/. Order at silver foil boxes, and if colour accuracy elsewhere on the box matters, read how many colors can you print on a box.
