There is no universal soap box size because there is no universal soap bar. Loaf moulds, cavity moulds and slab cutters all produce different bars, and the same recipe cures to different dimensions depending on how long it sat. This page gives you the measuring method and the common starting points, then you confirm against your own batch.
The measuring method
- Take three or four bars from a fully cured batch, not one fresh bar.
- Measure each one at its widest and tallest point, including any dome or bevel from the cutter.
- Use the largest of those numbers, not the average. The box has to fit the biggest bar you will produce.
- If the bar is shrink wrapped, banded or paper wrapped before it is boxed, measure it wrapped.
- Add a small clearance so the bar slides in without scraping the printed inside face. Too tight and the print scuffs, too loose and the bar rattles.
Common starting points by bar format
| Bar format | Approximate bar size | Notes for the box |
|---|---|---|
| Standard cold process slice | About 3.5 x 2.5 x 1 inches | The most ordered format, works as a straight tuck carton |
| Thick artisan bar | About 3.5 x 2.5 x 1.25 inches and up | Depth is the dimension people get wrong, measure the cut face |
| Guest or travel bar | Roughly half a standard bar in footprint | Small cartons need a proportionally larger tuck flap to stay closed |
| Round or oval puck | Diameter plus height | Either a square carton with clearance, or a sleeve sized to the curve |
| Loaf or gift set | Sum of the bars plus dividers | Specify the divider thickness, it is easy to forget in the maths |
Treat these as starting points for your own measuring, not as a catalogue. The box is cut to what you send us.
Structure changes the numbers
A tuck end carton needs the clearance described above and nothing more. A sleeve is sized to wrap the bar snugly, so a sleeve that is a little loose slides off in a display basket. A two piece gift box needs clearance between the base and the lid walls as well as around the bar, which is why a two piece box is always larger on the outside than a tuck box holding the same soap. If you are packing multiple bars, decide whether they sit side by side or stacked before you quote, because the two arrangements produce very different boxes.
Getting the size priced
The minimum order is 100 boxes per size and artwork, which is why most soap makers standardise on one or two carton sizes across a range of scents. Pricing starts from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes and is confirmed on your written quote. The die is included, so a genuinely custom size costs no more in tooling than a common one, along with the printing plates, design support, US shipping and a digital proof before anything prints. Turnaround is stated per product across Rush, Standard and Cost saver lanes, from about 7 business days plus 2 to 5 days for delivery.
Send your cured bar measurements to the quote form for a size check and a price. For board, finish and structure choices, read the soap boxes buying guide, and if this is a first run, see low minimum soap boxes.
