Soap is an unusual product to package because it changes size after you make it and it carries scent and oil that can migrate into board. This guide covers how to choose the box. When you are ready to order, the custom soap boxes product page is where the transaction happens.
Size the box to the cured bar
Cold process bars lose water during cure and end up slightly smaller than the mould that made them. If you size the carton to a fresh bar, later batches rattle. Measure a fully cured bar from a finished batch, take the largest of several, then add a small clearance so the bar slides in without scuffing the print. Melt and pour bars are more dimensionally stable, so the clearance can be tighter. Bars that are shrink wrapped or paper banded before boxing need the wrap included in the measurement.
For starting footprints by bar style, soap box dimensions lists the common formats and the measuring method in detail.
Board and finish choices
| Choice | What it gives you | Trade off |
|---|---|---|
| Uncoated kraft | Natural look, one or two colour print reads as handmade | Absorbs oils more readily, so it suits wrapped bars better |
| Coated white paperboard | Bright colour, sharp photographic print | Reads as manufactured rather than artisan, which may be the point |
| Matte lamination | Soft surface, resists fingerprints, good base for spot varnish | An extra pass, so it adds cost and a little time |
| Foil stamping | Metallic detail on a small panel | Needs simple shapes, fine hairlines do not hold |
| Die cut window | Shows the bar and lets the scent read as real | Weakens the panel, and a film patch is a separate operation |
Structure: tuck box, sleeve, or two piece
A straight tuck end carton is the workhorse and the cheapest per unit. A sleeve wraps a visible bar and uses less board but gives you less print area and no closure. A two piece box looks like a gift item and costs more per unit. Most soap makers start with a tuck box for the line and reserve a two piece for a gift set. If you sell sets, note that the outer set box is a separate item with its own minimum.
What to write on the ingredient panel
Leave more panel space than you think you need. Ingredient lists, weight statements and any warnings all compete with the branding, and they are the first thing that gets squeezed when the design is finished before the copy is. Decide the required text with your own advisor for your product and market, then lay out the box around it. We print the panel you supply.
Minimums, pricing and turnaround
The minimum is 100 boxes per size and artwork, which is the practical reason most soap makers launch with one carton size across several scents and differentiate with a label or a printed variant. Pricing starts from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes and the exact figure is confirmed on your written quote. Included with the order: the die, the printing plates, design support, US shipping and a digital proof. Turnaround is stated per product across Rush (expedited production plus air freight), Standard (air) and Cost saver (sea) lanes, from about 7 business days plus 2 to 5 days for delivery.
Starting small on purpose? Low minimum soap boxes covers a first run of 100. Otherwise send your cured bar measurements and artwork through the quote form.
