Speakers concentrate a lot of mass in a rigid box with a delicate face. The sizing decisions that matter are the ones that keep the drivers and the grille away from the outer wall, and that keep the cabinet from moving inside its own pack.
Measure the cabinet as it ships
Take the widest point on each axis. That is usually the grille or the cabinet face on the front, the feet on the bottom, and a binding post, port or handle on the back. If the grille ships attached, measure with it on. If it ships detached, it becomes a separate flat item with its own layer. Record the result as internal length x width x depth and say that the figures are internal, because a double wall carton can measure close to half an inch larger on the outside.
Let the weight choose the board
| Loaded weight band | Typical construction | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Light portable unit | Heavy paperboard carton with a die cut tray | Presentation matters more than compression strength |
| Mid weight bookshelf cabinet | Single wall corrugated with fitted end caps | Caps carry the load at the corners, where drops land |
| Heavy or floor standing cabinet | Double wall corrugated, often with a separate cap and tray set | Sustained compression in a pallet stack and a real drop risk |
| Pair packed together | Double wall with a centre divider | Two cabinets hitting each other is the main damage mode |
End caps deserve a note. For a rectangular cabinet, two corrugated or moulded caps that grip the top and bottom of the unit use less material than filling the whole void, hold the cabinet clear of every wall, and let the carton itself stay relatively slim.
The accessory layer decides the final depth
- Lay out everything that ships with the speaker: power supply, cable, remote, batteries, spare grille, manual, warranty card, feet or spikes.
- Group them the way the customer should meet them. Anything needed in the first minute goes on top.
- Measure that grouped layer as a block and add its height to the internal depth.
- Decide whether the accessories sit above the cabinet, beside it, or under a shelf. Above is easiest to open and adds the most height.
Print and finish
Audio buyers open the box slowly, so the inside of the carton is worth printing. Specify inside print if the brand justifies it, and check that any soft touch or matte laminate on the outside will not show every fingerprint after a week in a shop. Materials available include standard white cardstock for full colour, kraft for a plainer look, corrugated stock for structure and rigid press board for a premium presentation carton.
Ordering
The minimum is 100 boxes, and pricing starts from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes, confirmed on your written quote. The die and plates are included, which means a tray cut around your exact cabinet costs no more to tool than a generic one. Turnaround is quoted per job in three lanes, rush (expedited production plus air freight), standard (air) and cost saver (sea), from about 7 business days, plus 2 to 5 for delivery, and specialty imported constructions can run up to about 12 weeks.
