This is the guide. To order, go to two piece boxes. Read on if you are still deciding between lid styles, board constructions and the alternatives.
What "two piece" actually means
A base and a lid, made as separate parts, with no hinge and no closure hardware. The lid holds itself on by friction, which is why the tolerance between base and lid matters more here than on almost any other style. Too tight and the lid sticks or scuffs the wrap. Too loose and it slides off in transit. This is the number one thing to get right, and it is set at the dieline stage.
Lid coverage changes the whole look
| Lid style | Coverage | Reads as |
|---|---|---|
| Full telescoping | Lid covers nearly the whole base | Formal and protective, the base is barely seen |
| Shoulder or partial lid | Lid covers the top portion, base shows below | Two-tone presentation, lets the base carry a contrast color |
| Shallow lid | Lid covers only the top edge | Display-forward, most of the printed base is visible |
If you want a visible color break between base and lid, say so early: it changes how the wrap is printed and whether you need two artworks instead of one.
Rigid or folding construction
A rigid two piece box is built from thick chipboard wrapped in printed paper. It feels substantial and holds a crisp edge, and it ships assembled, which means you are paying to ship air. A folding carton two piece box costs less, ships flat and assembles on site, at the cost of some of the hand feel. A collapsible rigid box splits the difference by shipping flat and locking up into a rigid form. Compare on rigid chipboard boxes and collapsible boxes.
When a two piece box is the wrong answer
- You want a closure that clicks. That is a magnetic closure box, not a two piece.
- You want the reveal to be a slide. That is a drawer box with a sleeve and tray.
- The box will be mailed on its own. A lid held on by friction is not a shipping closure. Put it inside a mailer.
- Unit cost is the deciding factor. A tuck end carton will always be cheaper per unit than a base and lid.
Inserts
Because the lid lifts straight off, a two piece box shows its entire contents at once. That makes the insert part of the design rather than a packing detail. Foam, folded paperboard trays and fitted card platforms all work; the choice depends on the weight of the product and how many times the box will be opened.
Placing the order
The minimum is 100 sets per size and artwork. Bulk pricing starts from about $0.48 per unit and your written quote states the real number for your construction. Included: the cutting die, the printing plates, design support, US shipping and a digital proof before anything prints. Turnaround is quoted per product across three lanes: rush (expedited production plus air freight, adding roughly 7 to 25 percent), standard (air), and cost saver (sea). Production starts from about 7 business days plus 2 to 5 days for delivery. Rigid and specialty imported constructions can run up to about 12 weeks, so plan gift and seasonal programs well ahead.
