Watch boxes are small, which makes every millimetre visible. A cavity two millimetres too tight will not take the pillow, and a cavity two millimetres too loose lets the watch shift behind the lid. The method here is to size the interior around the pillow and then work outward through the rigid construction.
Measure the pillow, not the watch
In almost every presentation box the watch is wrapped around a cushion, and the cushion is what occupies the cavity. Get the pillow first, from your pillow supplier or by measuring a sample, then measure the pillow with the watch fitted and the strap or bracelet closed around it. That loaded assembly is your product. Measure it at its widest across, at its longest, and at its tallest point, which is usually the crown or the crystal.
Where a watch actually takes up space
| Measurement | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Lug to lug | The real length of the head. Case diameter understates it. |
| Case thickness plus crystal | Sets the clearance under the lid |
| Crown and pushers | Protrude past the case and can mark the cavity wall |
| Bracelet or strap circumference | Decides the pillow size, which decides the cavity |
Rigid construction adds to the outside
A rigid setup box is built over greyboard and wrapped in printed paper. That means the outside of the box is always larger than the cavity by twice the board caliper plus the wrap on each axis, and on a two piece box the lid adds another layer over the base. Greyboard for rigid boxes is commonly specified somewhere between about 1.5 mm and 3 mm, and the heavier the board the more substantial the box feels in the hand, at the cost of external size and shipping volume. Our explainer on greyboard covers the board itself.
One watch, a travel roll, or a collection
A single watch box is a cavity plus a pillow plus a lid. A two or three watch box is the same cavity repeated, with a divider whose caliper you must add between cavities, not just at the edges. A travel roll is a different problem entirely, sized on the rolled diameter rather than on a flat footprint. Decide which of these you are quoting before you measure, because they do not scale into one another.
Finish choices that change the size slightly
Foil stamping, embossing and a padded lid all sit within the wrap, but a padded lid adds real depth, often more than people expect, because the padding sits under the wrap across the whole lid. If you plan a padded lid, measure the lid clearance with the padding in place rather than adding it later. For published size references on finished watch boxes, see watch box dimensions, and for the product itself, watch boxes.
Ordering and turnaround
Minimum order is 100 boxes, from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes, confirmed on your written quote. The die, the plates, design support, US shipping and a digital proof before printing are included. We produce in West Chicago in the US and in Guangzhou in China. Three lanes are quoted per product: rush (expedited production plus air freight), standard (air) and cost saver (sea), from about 7 business days in production plus 2 to 5 days for delivery, and specialty imported rigid work can run up to about 12 weeks.
Send the loaded pillow measurements, the lug to lug span and how many watches per box. Request a quote and we will confirm the cavity, the board caliper and the external size.
