If you have collected quotes for custom boxes, you have probably seen a one off charge sitting above the per unit price, described as tooling, die charge, plate charge or setup. This page explains what it pays for, why it exists, and why you will not see it on an iBox quote.
What the tools actually are
Two physical things get made before your box can be produced.
- The cutting die. A board with steel rule blades set into it in the shape of your flattened box, including every cut, every crease line and every tab. It stamps your blank out of the printed sheet. Change the size of the box and you need a different die, because the blade positions are physical.
- The printing plates. The carriers that transfer your artwork onto the board. Traditionally one per colour, which is why some quotes list a per colour plate charge.
Both are made specifically for your job. That is the honest reason tooling charges exist: someone has to build the tools, and they only fit your box.
Why it matters to how you buy
A tooling charge changes the shape of the decision in two ways. First, it makes small runs disproportionately expensive, because a fixed cost is spread over few units. Second, it creates an incentive to squeeze your product into a supplier's existing die rather than build the box your product actually needs, which is how brands end up with rattling boxes and extra void fill.
How iBox handles it
| Item | On an iBox custom order |
|---|---|
| Cutting die | Included |
| Printing plates | Included |
| Design support and dieline help | Included |
| Digital proof before anything prints | Included |
| US shipping | Included |
| Minimum order | 100 boxes |
The practical consequence is worth stating plainly: because the die is included, there is no financial reason to compromise on your internal dimensions. A box cut to your exact product costs no more to tool than a box cut to a near standard size. Measure your product properly and ask for what it needs.
What still affects your price
Removing the tooling line does not make everything free. Per unit pricing starts from about $0.48 at bulk volumes and is confirmed on your written quote, and it still moves with quantity, box size, board grade, number of print colours, finishing such as foil or lamination, and whether you need an insert or partition. Quantity is the biggest lever of the six.
Turnaround and where the work happens
Turnaround is quoted per product across three lanes. Rush pairs expedited production with air freight and carries a premium of about 7 to 25% depending on the job. Standard moves by air. Cost saver moves by sea. The floor is from about 7 business days, plus 2 to 5 days for delivery, and specialty imported items can run up to about 12 weeks. We produce at two plants, West Chicago in the US and Guangzhou in China.
If you are comparing quotes, put them on the same basis first: ask each supplier what their number includes, then compare the landed cost of 100 boxes rather than the headline per unit figure. When you are ready, send your dimensions to /quote/. For the rest of the cost picture, see how much does custom packaging cost per unit, and for the colour side of plates, how many colors can you print on a box.
