Almost every gift box conversation starts with the finish, which is the wrong end. Foil, soft touch lamination and ribbon all sit on top of a structure, and the structure sets the unit price, the lead time and how the box arrives at your packing bench. Choose the build first.
Three builds, three different price points
| Build | How it arrives | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Folding carton | Flat, you fold it at pack time | Retail gift items, seasonal runs, anything price sensitive |
| Collapsible rigid | Flat, folds up and locks into a rigid box | Premium feel without paying to ship air |
| Fixed rigid setup box | Already assembled, takes storage space | Luxury items, corporate gifts, anything with a heavy insert |
| Drawer and sleeve | Two parts, assembled or flat depending on build | Gift sets where the reveal is part of the product |
If the flat pack idea is new to you, collapsible boxes explains how a rigid box can ship flat and what it costs you in assembly time at your end.
Inserts do more work than the lid
The moment a gift box is opened, the insert is what makes it read as considered or careless. Options run from a simple corrugated partition to a die cut foam or moulded pulp tray. Two practical rules: measure every item at its true widest point including any label or cap, and decide whether items should be removable in one motion or lifted out individually. Inserts have their own tooling, so lock the contents list before the die is cut. Changing one cavity later means a new insert die.
Finishes worth paying for, and finishes that get lost
- Soft touch or matte lamination. The first thing a recipient notices is texture, so this reads immediately.
- Foil stamping. High impact on a logo or a short word. Fine hairlines and small serif type do not hold well.
- Embossing. Works on simple bold shapes. Detail below a certain size flattens out.
- Spot UV. Best over a matte base where the contrast is visible. See spot UV boxes.
- Ribbon and magnets. Both are assembly operations, so they affect the lead time as well as the price.
Ordering, minimums and dates
The minimum is 100 boxes per size and artwork. Pricing runs from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes and is confirmed on your written quote once the build, board, print and finishes are set. Included: the die, the plates, design support, US shipping and a digital proof before anything prints. Production runs at two plants, West Chicago in the United States and Guangzhou in China.
Turnaround is stated per product across three lanes: Rush is expedited production plus air freight at a premium of about 7 to 25% depending on the job, Standard moves by air, and Cost saver moves by sea. The floor is from about 7 business days plus 2 to 5 days for delivery, and specialty imported items, which includes most hand assembled rigid work, can run up to about 12 weeks. Gift packaging is seasonal, so the single most useful thing you can do is give us the in hand date on the first email.
Send the contents list, the build you are leaning towards and your in hand date to the quote form. For sizing help before you enquire, see gift box dimensions.
