Spot UV is the cheapest way to make a printed box look considered, and the easiest finish to specify badly. It is a clear varnish laid down only where you tell it to go, then cured hard under UV light. The result is glossy and very slightly raised, and it only reads as a feature when the surface around it is matte.
How to build the file
The single most common mistake is sending artwork with the gloss "shown" as a visual effect. The press cannot interpret that. The varnish needs its own layer.
| File element | How to supply it |
|---|---|
| Spot UV areas | Vector shapes filled 100% on a separate layer named clearly, positioned exactly over the artwork below |
| Base artwork | Full CMYK or spot colour print layer, complete and independent of the varnish layer |
| Dieline | Its own layer, with cut, crease and bleed lines separated |
| Type used as spot UV | Outlined, and kept above hairline weights so it survives registration |
If your dieline layers are not set up yet, what a dieline is explains the anatomy, and design support is included with every order.
What holds and what does not
- Holds well: logos, bold type, pattern fields, panel borders, illustration outlines, a flood of varnish over one panel.
- Struggles: hairlines, very small serif type, tight gaps between shapes, and any element where being a fraction out of register would be visible.
- Best contrast: gloss varnish over matte lamination on a dark colour, where the reflection does the work.
- Weakest contrast: spot UV over an already glossy laminated surface, where you pay for a pass nobody notices.
Where it fits in the build
Spot UV is applied after printing and after lamination, so it is an additional operation on the run. In practice that means two things for your order: it is a separate line on the quote, and it adds a little time to production. If your date is tight, it is one of the first things worth cutting, and the box still looks good on a matte base alone. Compare with matte finish boxes if you want the base look without the extra pass.
Spot UV also pairs with foil and embossing, but stacking three finishes on one panel usually reads as noise. Pick one hero element and let it be the only shiny thing on the box.
Minimums, price and lead time
The minimum order is 100 boxes per size and artwork. Base pricing starts from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes, with spot UV quoted as an additional pass, and the full figure confirmed on your written quote. Included in every order: the die, the printing plates, design support, US shipping, and a digital proof before anything prints. Ask for the proof to show the varnish layer separately so you can check placement before the run.
Production runs at two plants, West Chicago in the United States and Guangzhou in China. Turnaround is stated per product across three lanes, Rush (expedited production plus air freight, at a premium of about 7 to 25% depending on the job), Standard (air) and Cost saver (sea), from about 7 business days plus 2 to 5 days for delivery.
