Start by throwing away the number on the spec sheet. A 27 inch monitor is not 27 inches in any direction that matters to a box. That figure is the diagonal of the active display area, and the box needs width, height and depth.
Turn the diagonal into two usable numbers
For a 16:9 panel the geometry is fixed. The diagonal of a 16 by 9 rectangle is the square root of 16 squared plus 9 squared, which is about 18.36. So the panel width is the diagonal multiplied by 16 and divided by 18.36, and the panel height is the diagonal multiplied by 9 divided by 18.36. Worked out for three common sizes, active area only:
| Stated diagonal | Active area width | Active area height |
|---|---|---|
| 24 in | About 20.9 in | About 11.8 in |
| 27 in | About 23.5 in | About 13.2 in |
| 32 in | About 27.9 in | About 15.7 in |
These are calculated from 16:9 geometry, not measured from a product, so treat them as a sanity check on the numbers a client sends you. Ultrawide and 16:10 panels use different ratios, and the same arithmetic works with their own numbers substituted.
Then add everything the calculation ignores
Bezels add to both width and height, and a thin-bezel panel can still have a thick chin at the bottom. Depth is the awkward one: measure the panel with the stand removed, because the stand and the base almost always travel flat in their own cavity rather than assembled. Add the cable bundle, the power brick if there is one, and the printed matter. Each of those is a real volume that has to live somewhere.
End caps, not void fill
A monitor is a large, thin, rigid object with a fragile face, and the damage mode is a corner impact translating into a cracked panel. Shaped end caps in EPS or molded pulp hold the panel away from every wall and take the impact at the corners, which is what loose fill cannot do. Size the carton around the capped assembly, not around the bare monitor. On larger panels, double wall board for the outer carton is the normal answer.
The carrier will have an opinion
Large flat cartons run into length and girth thresholds quickly. Pull your carrier's current oversize limits and design the external dimension under them. If the monitor already has a retail box and you are adding a shipping outer, the outer is the one that has to clear the threshold, so work from the outside in.
Minimum, price and turnaround
Minimum order is 100 boxes, from about $0.48 per unit at bulk volumes, confirmed on your written quote. Die and plates, design support, US shipping and a digital proof before anything prints are included. Turnaround is quoted per product across three lanes: Rush (expedited production plus air freight), Standard (air) and Cost saver (sea), with a floor of from about 7 business days, plus 2 to 5 for delivery. Specialty imported items can run up to about 12 weeks, and Rush carries about 7 to 25%, depending on the job.
Send the measured panel with the stand off, the packed weight and how it ships, and we will size the carton and the caps together at /quote/. The question-shaped version of this page is what size monitor box do I need, and custom electronic boxes covers the wider category.
