Gift boxes are bought against a date. Everything else about the order, the structure, the finish, the unit price, is negotiable; the date is not. So plan this order in reverse, starting from the day the boxes have to be full and out the door.
Work backwards from your date
| Milestone | Counted backwards from your gifting date |
|---|---|
| Boxes packed and shipped to recipients | Day zero |
| Boxes in your hands, ready to pack | Allow your own packing window |
| Delivery transit | 2 to 5 days |
| Production | From about 7 business days on the standard lane, longer for rigid or specialty imported constructions, up to about 12 weeks |
| Digital proof approved | Production waits on your written approval, so this is the true start |
| Artwork and dimensions sent | Everything before this is your own schedule |
If that arithmetic does not fit, the rush lane exists: expedited production plus air freight, adding roughly 7 to 25 percent depending on the job. It is a real option and it is better used deliberately than discovered in a panic.
Structures buyers actually order
- Rigid two piece box. The presentation default, a base and a lid with no hinge. Ships assembled. See two piece boxes.
- Magnetic closure box. Opens like a book and closes with a click. Reads as the most premium option and costs accordingly.
- Drawer box. A sleeve and a sliding tray, good for sets that reveal in sequence. See drawer boxes.
- Kraft gift box. Uncoated, natural, cheaper per unit, and the right answer for a brand whose whole story is restraint.
- Folding gift carton. Ships flat, assembles on site, lowest unit cost and lowest inbound freight.
Where the money goes at wholesale volume
On a large gift order, the two costs that move most are construction and freight. A rigid box ships assembled, so you are paying to move air; a collapsible or folding construction ships flat. On freight, the cost saver sea lane is materially cheaper than air for a bulky seasonal order, and it is only available to buyers who planned early. That is the practical reason to place a holiday order in summer rather than autumn.
Finishes worth the money on a gift box
Foil on a small mark, a blind emboss on an uncoated wrap, and a contrasting interior paper all read as considered without changing the structure. Ribbon, a tissue wrap and a printed card each add presentation for very little unit cost, and each is a hand assembly step you or your team may end up doing rather than the plant. Full-coverage foil and heavy multi-process finishing add both cost and production time, which matters against a fixed date. See embossed boxes.
Minimum, pricing and what is included
The minimum is 100 boxes per size and artwork. Bulk pricing starts from about $0.48 per unit, confirmed on your written quote. Included: the cutting die, the printing plates, design support, US shipping and a digital proof. Manufacturing is at West Chicago in the US and Guangzhou in China, and your quote states the plant and the lane.
